There are close to 50,000 abortions in Israel every year.
Many of these abortions could be prevented, if only the woman was provided some basic social and financial support.
Last year alone, Efrat saved the lives of 1,806 Jewish children in Israel.
If we had twice our budget we could have saved twice as many children.

Efrat's approach has proven to be successful. Women who register for an abortion are asked why they want to terminate their pregnancy. If they cite financial reasons, they are given Efrat's phone # and told to call us. Efrat has over 2,800 volunteers throughout the country who also refer cases to us. Once the pregnant woman calls, and if found to be in real need, we offer them 3 things:
1) Monthly food and baby supplies delivered every month to their door, which includes diapers, formula, canned and dry foods for a year and which is worth over $700
2) Free baby equipment, includes a crib, bassinet, stroller, baby bath & a baby kit (which includes blankets, baby clothes, bottles & other items) which is worth about $300
3) We match each woman with one of our over 2,800 volunteers who provide social support throughout the pregnancy.
Several factors have contributed to Efrat's very low overhead.
The Director of Efrat Dr. Eli Schussheim, a well-known surgeon in Israel, runs the organization entirely on a voluntary basis. Most of the office work, in our one and only office in Jerusalem, is done by Sherut Leumi - National Service volunteers. There is thus a potential to save the lives of tens of thousands of Jewish children each year which would create a badly needed wave of Aliyah - an "Inner Aliyah"! Dr. Eli Schussheim is fond of saying:
"In the over 20,000 cases EFRAT has supported over the past 30 years, I have yet to meet the first mother who told me she is sorry to have her child alive and well in her home."
How is Efrat Funded?
Efrat is funded entirely by private donations & does not enjoy any government funding whatsoever. More than half of our budget is raised through donations in Israel, with the rest coming from abroad. Our annual budget of about 2 million dollars supports about 2,000 pregnant women in distress, saving their 2,000 children from abortion. Thus the average cost of saving a child, by providing financial & social assistance to the mother, is about $1,000 per child.
All the money contributed on our contribution page goes directly to Israel to help mothers & their children. Efrat has no paid staff or office outside of Israel. The American Friends of Efrat has no office or paid staff. The American Friends NYC address is the home of a volunteer. There is no secretary to answer your call on the 1-800 #. Messages which are left on the 1-800 # are retrieved and returned from someone calling from the Efrat office in Israel.
Donors Matched with Expecting Mothers
Efrat-C.R.I.B. links donors who contribute $1,000 or more to the pregnant women who receive this assistance. Every $1,000 contributed will be matched to an expecting mother. Once the baby is born, the donor will receive a certificate which will include the name & birthday of the baby.
Why Efrat has been called: "The Real Pro-Choice Organization"
Of the close to 1,000 women who undergo an abortion in Israel every week there are hundreds whose first choice is to have their babies, but due to financial or social pressures they feel they have no choice but to terminate their pregnancies. Efrat was founded in 1977 precisely to reach out to these women in their hour of need. By offering a package of support described above Efrat gives the economic confidence to over 1,500 women every year to achieve their first choice- to have their babies.
Friends of Efrat is a group of "mini-philanthropists" who have taken upon themselves of saving a minimum of one Jewish child a year. For $84 a month for a year on your credit card (which is less than $3 a day for a year!) you can save the life of a Jewish child in Israel. $250 a month, for example, would save the lives of three Jewish children every year.
Friends of Efrat is also a group of volunteers who identify strongly with Efrat's goal that no Jewish child should be lost to the Jewish People due to the economic concerns of the parents. The goal is that no Jewish woman should have to go through an abortion due to financial concerns.
