Gift Time [The Gambler-A Mind Diseased in Childhood]
Gift Time

The Gambler, a mind that was diseased in childhood.

Giovanni, the eldest child, was born into a well to do family in Cosalá, Sinaloa, Mexico. The mother, though brilliant, was emotionally detached and could be demanding and "cold." Giovanni's mother once bragged about how her "servants" were the ones to change Giovanni's diapers. Giovanni's father showered the elementary school with gifts and a brand new set of baseball gear. Upon completing the sixth grade, the father asked the school's director if Giovanni had finished top because of influence or ability. The director reassured the father that Giovanni had earned first place through ability.

The mother expected for Giovanni to become a physician. The pressure was enormous for Giovanni to accomplish something his mother always wished she had become. Once in the big city, Culiacan, Sinaloa, Giovanni lost himself in brothels and gambling places. When he was about 17, Giovanni returned to Cosala looking defeated and unloved. At 18, Giovanni immigrated to the United States.

In the United States, his gambling habit became worse. He found interpersonal relationships difficult. As an adult, his dream was to become rich through gambling or through marriage. No matter what Giovanni did, his mother always had something negative to say. She would always remind him, "Why didn't you become a doctor?"

After serving in the U.S. Army, his most stable environment, he returned to a perceived "failed civilian life." Though handsome, it was difficult for him to "score" with what he considered as most desirable women (educated and rich). Giovanni would buy a car and would drive it until it became a clunker. Once the car broke down, he would dump it and walk or take the bus to work or the local casino in Gardena, California.

In his late 20's, he was seen with a woman, Janet, who he tried to hide from family members. He felt embarrassed that Janet was "only a waitress," and worst yet, divorced. The day he decided to marry Janet, Giovanni's mother set out to make all of the wedding preparations and to somehow present Janet as "virginal" with white dress and all.

Because of Giovanni's growing gambling habit, the marriage was very unstable. Most of his earnings went to support his gambling while Janet's income supported the family. After years of trying, Janet was finally able to have one son. Janet worked hard to raise her son and put him through private school. The public schools nearby were suboptimal.

Giovanni's mother announced to Cosalá's society that her son had become an engineer in the United States. Giovanni worked as a maintenance person at a meat factory. Too often, Janet had to be at the payroll office where Giovanni worked in order to make sure he did not misspend his money gambling.

Time was not kind to Giovanni. The strain of living a life of an "uncaring self" showed in his presentation. Whenever he visited his hometown, Cosala, Giovanni would get all dressed up with suit and tie and would insist that his wife wear high heels and heavy coats amidst the summer heat. Janet's high heels made it difficult for her to walk on Cosalá's cobblestone streets and back roads, dried arroyos (streams). Giovanni would avoid walking through the center of town in order to avoid inquiring minds or old friends. Giovanni was trying to present to society the facade that his mother had imposed upon him, but found it emotionally difficult.

Once at a resort restaurant in Mexico, his mother commented to guests that Giovanni's smile had improved thanks to his new dentures. By now, Giovanni had lost all apparent shame and shrugged off his mother's comments with a scornful smile.

Giovanni's mother eventually committed suicide while in her early 80's. Giovanni's son accomplished what had been impossible for the un-nurtured father. The son became a physician, a graduate of a renowned U.C. Medical School.

A mind that is diseased in childhood may never recover from events that become forgotten by most and live in a person's subconscious until death gives it a reprieve. If we wish to understand pedophiles and sexual deviants, we must visit their childhood. Therein lies the truth that can help us best prevent the perverted and diseased adult minds.

American children are often pressured to become that which many parents see as most desirable, i.e., doctors and lawyers. In terms of my kids, I simply showed them the road to knowledge, and I let them pursue their own goals. I set out to accomplish my own dreams without imposing such nearly impossible goals on my children. Today I am doing what once caused me so much fear and uncertainty. My kids are thriving in what they see as their destiny. I am proud of my kids. Are you?
